Hilltoppers Rally Twice but Fall to Concord, 4-2

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — The West Liberty University women's soccer team battled back twice in the second half but fell to Concord University, 4-2, Wednesday at the West Family Athletic Complex.

The Hilltoppers dropped to 2-9-1 overall and 2-8 in the Mountain East Conference with the loss, while Concord improved to 3-7-2, 3-5-2.

West Liberty created early opportunities while the match remained scoreless, with Kylie Collins putting two shots toward the Concord goal during the opening eight minutes, including one that struck the woodwork.

Concord broke through in the 26th minute when Molly Watters found the net and added another goal from Ailsa Swinburne in the 36th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Kaisa Vale made two saves during the opening half to keep the Hilltoppers within striking distance.

West Liberty answered after halftime when Rylee Stottlemyer scored at 64:26 to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Hilltoppers continued to create chances, with Ariana Bosh and Isabella Guerra each putting shots on frame, but Concord answered with another goal at 77:32 to restore its two-goal advantage.

The Hilltoppers refused to go quietly, pulling back within 3-2 at 86:32 when Frida Lundberg finished an assist from Allie Callahan. Concord, however, added a final goal to close out the 4-2 victory.

West Liberty finished with eight shots, putting six on goal, while Concord held a 12-8 edge in total shots and a 9-6 advantage in shots on frame. The Hilltoppers also earned four corner kicks.

Stottlemyer and Lundberg each scored on their only shot attempt, while Callahan recorded the assist. Vale played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with five saves.

The Hilltoppers will look to bounce back Sunday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. Mountain East Conference matchup in Buckhannon.
