Washington, Pa. – The West Liberty University men's and women's tennis teams split their matches with Washington & Jefferson Tuesday at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.
The Hilltopper men defeated the Presidents 5-2. In singles play, Pablo Zubieta earned a straight-set victory over Jacob Bennett, 6-3, 6-1, while Ethan Shepard dominated Jackson Akers 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot. Austin Zgurski captured the No. 3 match with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win over Colby Peters, and Ignacio Giurfa closed out singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alex Durig.
In doubles, West Liberty secured the top two matches. Zubieta and Zgurski defeated Nate Clarke and Durig 6-2 at No. 1, while Giurfa and Shepard downed Bennett and Peters 6-1 to claim the No. 2 match.
On the women's side, the Hilltoppers fell 6-1. West Liberty's lone victory came at No. 1 singles, where Maria Martirosyan defeated Claire Loomis 6-4, 6-1.
Both teams will next compete in the ITA regional tournament Thursday through Sunday at Bloomsburg University.
