Hilltoppers Drop MEC Opener At Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (2-0-0, 1-0-0) remained unbeaten with an 8-0 victory over West Liberty (0-3-0, 0-1-0) on Sunday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.

The Falcons struck for four goals in the opening half, with Sam Yuen scoring twice and later completing a hat trick to lead the home team's attack. Despite the pressure, West Liberty goalkeeper Cianna Butera was a steady presence, turning aside 20 shots in 90 minutes of work while facing 44 total attempts.

Fairmont State continued its offensive push in the second half, adding four more goals to seal the result. Yuen finished the night with four goals and an assist, while teammates Payton Parliament, Rania Hazri, Serenity Thomas, and Calloway Segeleon each contributed a goal.

For the Hilltoppers, Butera's performance in goal stood out as she made 10 saves in each half, keeping West Liberty battling until the final whistle.

West Liberty now turns its attention to a rivalry matchup with Wheeling Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex, where the Hilltoppers will host Ohio Valley soccer night.
