WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team will look to build on back-to-back Mountain East Conference draws when it steps out of league play Saturday for a road test at California (Pa.). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
The Hilltoppers (0-1-2, 0-0-2 MEC) showed plenty of fight in Wednesday's 2–2 draw at Davis & Elkins, scoring twice in the first half and weathering constant pressure from the nationally regarded Senators. Freshman forward Travis Scandalis netted his first career goal off an assist from Oskar Voges, while sustained pressure in the box led to an own goal that briefly gave WLU a 2–1 halftime lead. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Shai'ya Henry posted four saves as veterans Lachlan Quate and Alex Anderson anchored a back line that held firm despite a 19–3 shot disadvantage.
Through three matches, West Liberty has spread the scoring around, with Voges, Scandalis, and the defense all factoring into goals. The Hilltoppers are averaging a goal per game while showing resiliency in close contests.
California (Pa.) (2-0) enters Saturday's match riding early-season momentum. The Vulcans have yet to concede a goal, outscoring their opponents 5–0 across two matches. Senior forward Brady Olsen leads the attack with two goals on the year, while goalkeeper AJ Visco has been perfect in net, stopping all eight shots he's faced.
Saturday's meeting will give West Liberty another chance to test itself against a strong Atlantic Region opponent.
