Hilltoppers Battle to 2–2 Draw with Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with Davis & Elkins on the road Wednesday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 2–2 draw in Mountain East Conference play at Nuttall Field.

The Hilltoppers (0-1-2, 0-0-2 MEC) found the back of the net twice in the opening half to grab the momentum against a Senators squad that controlled much of the possession and outshot West Liberty 19–3 on the day.

After D&E's Francisco Lopez Kreik opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, West Liberty wasted little time responding. Travis Scandalis converted a feed from Oskar Voges in the 39th minute to bring the Black and Gold level at 1–1. Moments later, West Liberty capitalized again, benefitting from pressure in the box to force an own goal that gave the visitors a 2–1 lead heading into halftime.

The Senators continued to push after the break, finally breaking through in the 80th minute when Santiago Maiolo netted the equalizer off a pass from Hugo Fauli.

Despite being under pressure throughout the match – D&E held a 9–2 edge in corner kicks and put six shots on frame – the Hilltopper defense held strong. Goalkeeper Shai'ya Henry turned aside four shots in nearly 86 minutes of action, while the back line, anchored by Lachlan Quate and Alex Anderson, weathered wave after wave of attack.

Scandalis finished with his first goal as a Hilltopper, Voges added his first assist of the season, and WLU continued to show resilience early in the year, earning a second straight draw against an MEC opponent.

West Liberty returns to action with a trip to Cal.Pa. Saturday in a non-conference match up.
