Hilltoppers Advance to MEC Semifinals with 4–1 Win Over Glenville State

Salem, Va. – The West Liberty University softball team continued its strong postseason push on Thursday, earning its second victory of the Mountain East Conference Tournament with a 4–1 upset over South Division No. 1 seed Glenville State at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex.

The Hilltoppers struck early in the second inning thanks to a clutch two-run single from Kayla Mancuso, who drove in Jaden Conrad and Kadence Pettit to give West Liberty a quick 2–0 lead. That early momentum proved decisive, as the Hilltoppers maintained control for the remainder of the game.

In the sixth, Sydney Johnson delivered key insurance runs with a two-run double down the left-field line, scoring Kassydi Harris and Conrad. Conrad sparked the offense from the bottom of the lineup, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Mancuso and Johnson each tallied two RBIs, while Sara Simon and Jillian Morr chipped in with two hits apiece in a 12-hit showing for West Liberty.

Ashlyn Tapman (5-8) was solid in the circle, tossing 5.1 innings of three-hit ball, allowing just one unearned run and striking out five. Pettit came on in relief to shut the door, retiring five of the six batters she faced to earn her fourth save of the season.

Glenville State's lone run came in the sixth on an obstruction call at the plate, but the Hilltoppers' composed pitching and clean execution held the Pioneers in check throughout.

With the win, the Toppers are 30-23 on the season, giving them their first 30 win season since 2022. West Liberty advances to Friday's semifinal at noon, where they will face North Division rival Fairmont State. The Hilltoppers won three of four matchups against the Falcons during the regular season. The winner will move on to the MEC Championship game.
