Toppers Split Doubleheader With Point Park

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Behind a dominant pitching performance and timely hitting, the West Liberty University softball team edged Point Park 2-1 in game one of Thursday's doubleheader at the Hilltoppers Softball Complex.

Leah Alford delivered a gem in the circle for the Black and Gold, tossing a complete-game one-hitter while allowing just one earned run and walking one. Alford improved to 4-3 on the season with the win, keeping Point Park off balance all afternoon and retiring 11 batters via flyouts.

After Point Park scratched across a run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly, the Hilltoppers wasted no time responding. Jillian Morr led off the home half of the inning with a double and later came around to score on a clutch RBI single up the middle from Emily Allen to knot the game at 1-1.

The go-ahead run came one inning later. Pinch hitter Ashlyn Tapman delivered in a big way with a sharp single up the middle, scoring Olivia Munoz from second and giving West Liberty a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. Tapman advanced to second on the throw.

Allen led the offensive effort with a pair of hits.

Game 2

West Liberty (26-23, 18-10) dropped a 4-1 heartbreaker in nine innings to Point Park in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader at the Hilltoppers Softball Complex.

Kadence Pettit was solid through eight innings, holding the Pioneers to just one run before a ninth-inning surge from Point Park proved to be the difference. Pettit (13-4) went 8.2 innings, striking out four and allowing six hits before giving way to Ashlyn Tapman, who recorded the final out of the game.

Point Park got on the board first in the fourth, but West Liberty responded with a clutch seventh-inning rally. After Kassydi Harris entered as a pinch runner and stole second, she advanced to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pettit, tying the game at 1-1 and sending it into extras.

In the ninth, Point Park's Emma Henry delivered a two-run double to left center, followed by an RBI double from Bella Magliocco that pushed the lead to 4-1 and ultimately sealed the win for the visitors.

Offensively, the Hilltoppers were limited to just two hits — one each from Kayla Mancuso and Ashlyn Tapman — as Point Park's Savannah Lee went the distance for the complete-game win.
