GREENSBURG, Pa. – The West Liberty University baseball team put up a strong fight but ultimately fell to Seton Hill, 10-6, in non-conference action on the road.
The Hilltoppers (14-11) struck first in the opening inning when Jacob Sherman scored on a passed ball after reaching on a single. However, Seton Hill (18-3) responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a sacrifice fly and back-to-back home runs to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
West Liberty chipped away at the deficit in the fourth inning. Noah Mildren doubled home Kobe Hill, and Sherman brought another run across on a groundout to cut the gap to 5-3. Seton Hill answered in the bottom half with an RBI single from McGuire to extend its lead to 6-3.
The Hilltoppers made their biggest push in the fifth, as Adam Och launched a two-run homer to left field, bringing in Will Balgo and making it a one-run game at 6-5. However, the Griffins broke things open in the sixth, pushing across four runs to put the game out of reach at 10-5.
West Liberty added one more run in the ninth, as William Glick singled home Mildren, but the rally fell short.
Ryan Clark (0-2) took the loss for the Hilltoppers, allowing five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings of work. Tanner Pelaez and Mason Bille combined to finish the game on the mound.
The Hilltoppers will return to Mountain East Conference action Saturday at Glenville State in a doubleheader with the Pioneers beginning at 1 p.m.
