Bridgeport, W.Va. – The West Liberty softball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in a game that was called after five innings on Saturday at the Regional Roundup at The Bridge Sports Complex.
West Liberty (4-5) got off to a strong start as Jaden Conrad launched a solo home run to center field in the first inning, giving the Hilltoppers an early 1-0 lead. However, IUP (3-0) responded with a three-run second inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to take control of the game.
The Crimson Hawks extended their lead in the fourth inning, scoring twice more on a throwing error and a wild pitch to make it 5-1. West Liberty struggled to generate offense after Conrad's early homer, managing just three hits in the contest.
Madison Angus (0-1) took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (only one earned) on five hits while striking out four in 3.2 innings. Ashlyn Tapman entered in relief, recording the final out of the fourth inning.
For IUP, Kendall Young (1-0) earned the win, holding West Liberty to three hits and one run over five innings while striking out two.
The Hilltoppers will return to play Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Bluefield State in their final game of the Regional Roundup at The Bridge Sports Complex.
