West Liberty’s Tony Wood Named MEC Wrestler of the Week After Dominant 5–0 Performance

12/8/2025 3:15:00 PM

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — West Liberty University sophomore Tony Wood has been named the Mountain East Conference Wrestler of the Week, presented by The Health Plan, following a commanding tournament performance that featured five straight victories and a first-place finish at 149 pounds.

Wood was unstoppable throughout the competition, scoring 29 team points and earning bonus points in four of his five matches. He opened the day with back-to-back pins, defeating Max Brewer of Thomas More in 1:15 and Dakota Quinlan of Rochester in 2:27. He continued his momentum in the quarterfinals with a fall over Marian's Terry Easley in 4:01.

In the semifinals, Wood needed just 1:37 to record another pin, this time over Indiana Tech's Marlone Kirksy. He sealed the tournament championship in convincing fashion, posting a 15–5 major decision over Indiana Tech's Mike Loney.

The MEC honor comes on the heels of another dominant outing last week, where Wood again went 5–0 with two technical falls, a pin, a decision, and a major decision for the title. His 26 team points in that event were the most by any Hilltopper in the field.

Wood and the Hilltoppers will be back in action next weekend at the prestigious Midwest Classic.
