WHEELING, W.Va. — The West Liberty University women's soccer team rose to the occasion on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Wheeling University 2–0 at Bishop Schmitt Field to clinch the final spot in the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
Needing a two-goal victory to overtake the Cardinals for the last postseason berth, the Hilltoppers delivered a complete performance on both ends of the field. Senior goalkeeper Cianna Butera anchored the back line with six saves, earning her second shutout of the season.
The first half featured a defensive battle, with both teams trading possession but unable to break through. Butera came up big with key saves in the 10th, 11th, and 35th minutes to keep the game scoreless. On the offensive end, Marisa Knouff and Perla Bäckberg registered quality chances, but their shots were handled by Wheeling goalkeeper Akyla Walcott, sending the match into halftime tied 0–0.
West Liberty broke through in the 65th minute when Bäckberg found the back of the net off an assist from Abigail Barki, giving the Hilltoppers the lead they needed. Less than ten minutes later, Leah Paugh added an insurance goal in the 74th minute, converting a pass from Frida Lundberg to make it 2–0.
From there, the Hilltoppers' defense shut the door. Butera made several late stops to preserve the clean sheet and secure West Liberty's place in the MEC postseason.
"Amazing squad effort from our team today," said Head Coach Pete McMenemy. "They were up against it in terms of what was needed and we showed up in a massive way. I'm so proud of each and every one of them for their desire and determination to make sure our program is always a playoff team. We're really excited for the game on Sunday and we appreciate all the support tonight from our family members and friends."
With the win, the Hilltoppers (4–13–1, 2–11–1 MEC) advance to face West Virginia State in the MEC Quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Institute, W.Va.
