PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Despite a strong offensive showing, the West Liberty University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Point Park University on Wednesday evening at Highmark Stadium.
The Hilltoppers (2-7-1) fired 20 total shots, including 13 on goal, but Point Park goalkeeper Gregorio Capponi turned aside 12 of them to preserve the victory for the Pioneers.
Point Park struck first in the 36th minute when Fridolin Gefrorer, assisted by Guilherme Galvao, put the hosts ahead. West Liberty responded just three minutes later, as Leyton Collier found the back of the net to level the match at 1-1 before halftime.
The Hilltoppers controlled much of the play early in the second half, generating several quality chances through Collier, Lachlan Quate, and Travis Scandalis, but Capponi continued to stand tall in net. Point Park regained the lead on a penalty kick by Guy Lehrer, and despite a late push — including a Collier penalty attempt that was saved in the 89th minute — West Liberty was unable to find the equalizer.
Shai'ya Henry made seven saves in goal for the Hilltoppers, while Collier led the offense with six shots (four on target) and one goal. Scandalis added four shots, including three on goal.
West Liberty returns home next Wednesday to host Davis & Elkins in a 5 p.m. kickoff at the West Family Athletic Complex.
