WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it travels to Franciscan University for a nonconference matchup at Belleview Park in Steubenville, Ohio. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
The Hilltoppers (1-0) enter the match coming off a strong 5-2 victory over Washington & Jefferson last week at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center. West Liberty earned the doubles point and captured four of six singles matches to secure the team win.
In singles play, Pablo Zubieta and Ethan Shepard led the way with straight-set victories, while Austin Zgurski and Ignacio Giurfa also earned wins to complete the Hilltoppers' sweep through the top four spots. Zubieta and Zgurski also paired for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while Giurfa and Shepard added a 6-1 triumph at No. 2.
This past weekend at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, Zubieta and Shepard represented the Hilltoppers in both singles and doubles.
Franciscan (1-0) enters Tuesday's contest after opening its fall season with a 5-2 victory over Pitt-Greensburg. The Barons swept doubles play and earned straight-set wins in four singles matches, led by Daniel Drejza and Luis Kanzelberger at the top of the lineup.
