BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The West Liberty University men's and women's tennis teams began competition Thursday at the 2025 ITA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Bloomsburg University.
On the women's side, the Hilltoppers saw action in both singles and doubles. In doubles play, Maria Martirosyan and Courtney Curnutte battled hard in their Round of 32 match but fell 8-5 to Ashleigh Grooms and Sohana Thompson of West Chester.
Later in singles competition, Curnutte faced Maria Moskaltsova of IUP in the Round of 64, dropping a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Martirosyan, seeded No. 14 in the draw, also opened singles play against Charliz Tabili of IUP, coming up short in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
On the men's side, Pablo Zubieta and Ethan Shepard opened with a Round of 32 doubles match against the seeded pairing of Hugo Poulain and Stefans Audrins of West Virginia Wesleyan. The Hilltoppers duo kept the set tight before ultimately dropping an 8-4 decision.
In singles play, Shepard fell 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 64 to Niclas Naedele of West Virginia State. Zubieta also took the court in singles, battling Iu Casamitjana Badies of Bloomsburg in a hard-fought Round of 64 match before coming up just short, 7-5, 6-2.
