WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team will look to build on its recent momentum when it hosts Frostburg State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex in a key late-season Mountain East Conference matchup.
The Hilltoppers (4-5-3, 3-4-2 MEC) are coming off a gritty 1-0 victory over Davis & Elkins on Wednesday. Jasper Newton netted the decisive goal late in the first half off an assist from Joao Victor Sylvino, while goalkeeper Shai'ya Fitzgerald anchored the defense with seven saves to secure the shutout. The sophomore has now appeared in eight matches this season, continuing to provide stability in net for the Hilltoppers.
West Liberty enters the weekend averaging 1.33 goals per game, with six players contributing multiple goals this season. Alex Watt and Ethan Nethery lead the attack with two goals and one assist apiece, while Leyton Collier and Lachlan Quate have each tallied three assists to pace the squad's distribution.
Defensively, West Liberty has limited opponents to 1.58 goals per game behind the steady play of Fitzgerald and Emi Vernhamn and a back line led by Kevin Teather and Alex Anderson, both of whom have started every match this fall.
Frostburg State (4-6-2, 4-4-1 MEC) enters Sunday's contest following a 2-0 setback to Salem on Wednesday. The Bobcats are led by Carlos Quintero Rivas with three goals and two assists, while Dominic Good has added three goals of his own. In goal, Jan Foret has posted a 1.09 goals-against average and two shutouts this season.
Sunday's meeting marks the second between the two teams this year, with Frostburg earning a 4-1 win in the first matchup back on Sept. 17 in Maryland. The Hilltoppers are currently sixth in the MEC standings two points behind the Bobcats for fifth.
