INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University edged West Liberty University 3-2 on Sunday at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets took an early lead with two first-half goals, while West Liberty responded with two goals in the second half to tie the match. However, a late goal secured the win for the Yellow Jackets despite West Liberty's goalkeeper making eight saves.
The first half began with West Liberty establishing their defensive stance early in the game. Goalkeeper Cianna Butera made key saves, notably stopping a bottom center shot by Nagi Higashi in the 16th minute, keeping West Liberty in the contest. Despite West Liberty's defensive efforts, West Virginia State capitalized with a goal from Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz in the 17th minute.
As the half progressed, West Liberty attempted to gain offensive momentum, with Isabella Guerra's shot being blocked in the 9th minute. However, the home team managed to extend their lead with a second goal by Ece Lea Evin, assisted by Sharon Freire Omonigho, in the 36th minute. The half concluded with West Liberty trailing 2-0.
The second half started with Maya Taggart of West Liberty finding the back of the net in the 66th minute, assisted by Corinne Westbrook and Perla Bäckberg, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. Goalkeeper Butera made crucial saves, including a penalty kick stop, maintaining the team's chance to level the score. However, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead with a goal in the 80th minute, making it 3-1.
West Liberty continued to press and was rewarded when Taggart scored her second goal of the half in the 90th minute, bringing the score to 3-2. Despite West Liberty's late push and attempts by Taggart and Beatrice Allan, the Yellow Jackets held on to close the match with a 3-2 victory.
Taggart scored two goals on three shots, converting all her attempts on goal. Butera made eight saves while facing 30 shots, contributing defensively throughout the match. Bäckberg assisted on one of the team's goals, adding a point to her tally. Westbrook also provided an assist, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.
Looking ahead, West Liberty will face Davis & Elkins on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex.
