West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team will look to build on the momentum of its first win of the season when it heads to the capital city Wednesday for a Mountain East Conference clash against the University of Charleston. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
The Hilltoppers (1-6, 0-4 MEC) broke through in a big way Sunday, scoring eight goals in a dominant 8-0 victory over Salem at the West Family Athletic Complex. Sophomore forward Perla Bäckberg led the charge with her first career hat trick, while Abby Kightlinger, Holly Brighton, Kallie McCutcheon, Katie Robinson, and Dena Stallings each added goals in the win.
Bäckberg paces the Hilltoppers with three goals on the season, while Brighton, Kightlinger, McCutcheon, Robinson, Stallings, and Rylyn Bielinski have also found the back of the net. Goalkeeper Cianna Butera has made 56 saves, ranking among the MEC leaders, but has faced heavy pressure as West Liberty opponents have averaged more than 21 shots per game.
Charleston (3-3-1, 3-1-1 MEC) enters Wednesday's match coming off a 3-2 win at West Virginia Wesleyan. The Golden Eagles are unbeaten in their last three conference contests and have relied on a balanced attack. Anae Buehlmann leads UC with three goals, while Jamie Bland has added two scores and an assist. In goal, Sofia Mosquera Chaverra has anchored the defense with a .844 save percentage and two shutouts.
The Hilltoppers will be looking to carry their offensive spark from Sunday into league play and break into the MEC win column against a Charleston squad currently sitting third in the South Division standings.
