Toppers Drop Road Contest At Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Liberty (1-7-0, 0-5-0) was defeated by Charleston  (4-3-1, 4-1-1)  8-0  Wednesday at the Welch Athletic Complex. 

 

Charleston's offensive effort included a hat trick, contributing to their commanding victory.

 

The match opened with West Liberty's goalkeeper Cianna Butera making crucial saves to keep the game level in the early minutes. Despite the Golden Eagles' persistent offensive efforts, Butera managed to deny attempts from Li-Lou Debaecker and Sydney Crowe, maintaining a clean sheet through much of the first half.

 

In the 32nd minute, the home team broke through with a goal by Debaecker, followed by another score from Mya Mills, assisted by Maya Pooler, in the 38th minute. West Liberty's defense faced consistent pressure, but Butera continued to make key stops, closing the period with the Golden Eagles leading 2-0.

 

The second half commenced with Charleston maintaining their momentum from the first half. West Liberty's Abigail Barki took an early shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but it was saved by Ines Degli Esposti. Charleston extended their lead with multiple goals, including one by Linsey Hackney in the 52nd minute and another by Anae Buehlmann shortly after.

 

Despite West Liberty's efforts, including shots by Abby Kightlinger and Frida Lundberg, the Golden Eagles remained effective in defense and capitalized on their opportunities. Debaecker added two goals to the tally, with assists from Zailee Roberts and Ciara Casamento, respectively. West Liberty's Butera made crucial saves, but the home team continued to widen the margin, ultimately concluding the match with a final score of 8-0 in favor of Charleston.

 

Cianna Butera made ten saves, with seven in the first half, to help the team defensively. Frida Lundberg took two shots, with one on target, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Abigail Barki recorded a shot on goal, adding pressure to the opposing defense. Abby Kightlinger also had a shot on goal from the defensive line.

 

In their next game, the Hilltoppers return home to host W.Va. Wesleyan Sunday, the match is set for 1 p.m.at the West Family Athletic Complex.
