Thursday Road Opener for WLU Women

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team kicks off the 2024 regular season on the road this week when the Hilltoppers take on nearby Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference member Seton Hill (Pa.) University. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon at Dicks Sporting Goods Field in Greensburg,Pennsylvania.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • First-year Head Coach Pete McMenemy and the Hilltoppers are coming off an 2023 campaign with wanting more with the WLU squad's first postseason appearance since the 2018 season
  • West Liberty posted a 7-8-4 record overall last fall but that mark was somewhat deceptive as four of WLU's eight losses came by the margin of a single goal
  • The Hilltoppers were victorious seven times during the 2023 season, the most wins in program history since the team's inception in 2012
  • Midfielder Jori Alexander selected All-MEC Honorable Mention in 2023
  • The Hilltoppers were picked third in the MEC North Division of the Mountain East Conference Preseason Poll
  • The top three places in each division earn Mountain East Conference Tournament bids this November
 
           
SETON HILL STORYLINES:
 
  • Seton Hill (Pa.) women's soccer program were picked 2nd in the West in the PSAC Preseason Poll
  • The Griffins finished the 2023 season with an 7-11-1 overall and 6-9-1 in conference play
  • SHU was edged 2-1 by Mercyhurst in the quarterfinal round of the PSAC women's soccer tournament last season
  • Freshman defender Maddie Teakle and Freshman midfielder Kilee Coatney earned All-PSAC West second team honors during the 2023 season
  • Head Coach Riley Butler enters his first season as Head Coach for the Griffins 
 
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • This is the fourth meeting between the two programs. The Hilltoppers have fallen in each of those outings, although deceiving with two of those contests being decided by one goal
  • The Hilltoppers and Griffins first met on September 9, 2012 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. The Griffins edged the Hilltoppers with a goal scored in the 80th minute
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Hilltoppers will return to the Keystone State on Sunday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown for a non-conference match against the Mountain Cats. Kickoff will be at noon on the pitch at Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
