WEST LIBERTY,  W.Va. – For the first time this season, the West Liberty women's soccer team will compete on their home pitch on Sunday afternoon. The Hilltoppers host the Falcons of Fairmont State at West Family Athletic Complex Sunday, September 15. Kickoff for the Mountain East Conference contest  is set for 1:00 p.m.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES:

• First-year Head Coach Peter McMememy and the Hilltoppers are coming off an 2023 campaign that ended on a high note with the WLU squad's first postseason appearance since the 2018 season

• The Hilltoppers were victorious seven times during the 2023 season, the most wins in program history since the team's inception in 2012 

• Midfielders Jori Alexander and Amelia Compston were selected All-MEC Honorable Mention in 2023 

• The Hilltoppers were picked third in the MEC North Division of the Mountain East Conference Preseason Poll

• The Hilltoppers are 0-2-0 through two matches played 

• Seton Hill (Pa.) toppers WLU, 1-0 on the road to open up the regular season 

• In their second outing of the season, West Liberty attempted 10 shots and 5 shots-on-goal but couldn't net one past the UPJ goalkeeper. West Liberty fell to Pitt-Johnstown, 2-0 

FAIRMONT STATE STORYLINES: 

• The Falcons finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 7-10-2 and 5-8-1 in conference play 

• Fairmont State is 0-1-1 through their first two matches of the 2024 season

• The Falcons opener ended in a tie against Shepherd and netted a late second half goal to force a tie against Seton Hill (Pa.) a few days later 

• The Falcons were picked second in the MEC Preseason Poll 

SERIES HISTORY:

The Hilltoppers and Fighting Falcons have met on a total of 19 occasions. The Falcons hold the all-time series lead, 3-8-8. The Falcons have been victorious in the last four outings against the Hilltoppers. WLU's first postseason appearance and victory was against Fairmont State on October 30, 2018. The match was tied at the end of regulation and the Hilltoppers edged the Falcons in penalty kicks that day, 7-6.

The Hilltoppers next match will be on the road next Wednesday September 18. The Hilltoppers travel to Bridgeport, West Virginia for a match against Salem. Kickoff between the Hilltoppers and Tigers is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Bridge Sports Complex.
