7/1/2024 5:54:00 PM

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference announced the final standings for the annual MEC Commissioner's Cup on Monday afternoon, with West Liberty University notching a fourth place finish. The Hilltoppers totaled 99.5 of 174 possible points for an all-sports rating of 0.57184 as they claimed one team conference title, sharing the men's basketball regular season championship with a 17-3 league record. By sharing the conference title in men's hoops, the Black & Gold have clinched at least a share of the championship in the sport during 14 of the last 15 seasons. West Liberty was one of eight different schools to win an MEC championship (regular season, division, and tournament) during the 2023-24 year as the league sponsors 23 sports.

In MEC sports which were not split into divisions, acrobatics & tumbling joined men's basketball with a top-5 finish as they were fourth in the league standings. In divisional standings both volleyball and women's soccer finished within the top-3 with second and third place finishes respectively.

A total of seven Hilltopper programs advanced and participated in MEC postseason tournaments. The men's basketball team advanced to the championship game before falling to No. 12 Charleston in a top-15 tilt, while both acrobatics & tumbling and volleyball advanced to the semifinal rounds of their respective championships. Other postseason qualifiers included men's soccer, women's basketball, women's soccer, and softball.

Among sports which did not have regular season standings or a postseason tournament, the men's track & field team posted a second place outdoor finish and third place indoor finish, while the women's track & field team was fourth and fifth respectively. Also recording top-5 finishes at conference championships were men's wrestling in second and women's golf in fifth.

The Commissioner's Cup standings are compiled utilizing an "all-sports rating." This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available (average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution). A bonus point is given for winning the conference tournament (in applicable sports).
