Glenville, W.Va. – While the West Liberty University baseball team was the home team on the scoreboard, the Hilltoppers fell twice on the road to the MEC South Division leading Glenville State Pioneers by scores of 14-1 and 5-4 on Friday afternoon as the games were moved to the Sue Morris Sports Complex due to field conditions on the hilltop. The Pioneers broke open game one with a 12-run top of the third inning to secure the win in the opening game of the double header. HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
- After Brady Harmon and the West Liberty defense forced Glenville State to leave a base runner stranded in scoring position after a 2-out double to right field, it was Ryan Talbert who put the Hilltoppers on the board first as he blasted a ball over the right field fence to make it a 1-0 ball game.
- The Pioneers evened the game at one apiece in the top of the second with a solo homerun of their own to right field in the first at-bat of the frame.
- Kobe Hill and Noah Mildren were each able to draw a walk in the bottom of the second and give WLU a pair of base runners, however they were unable to come around and score as they were left stranded on first and second.
- Glenville State did their most damage of the day in the top of the third inning as they plated 12 runs in the frame, including ten which occurred with two outs. The Pioneers were aided with back-to-back homeruns, the first being a 3-run shot over the right field fence and the second a solo blast to right field, midway through the inning.
- Talbert notched his second hit of the contest in the bottom of the third but was left stranded after a pair of strikeouts ended the inning, and GSU extended their lead once again as a sacrifice fly to right field scored one run to make it 14-1.
- Trevor Thomas led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double to left field and was the second and last extra base hit of the contest for WLU, but Glenville State was once again able to shut down the inning with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out.
- After allowing one run the previous inning, Craig Wilson settled in on the mound starting in the top of the fifth as he allowed only four hits from that point on and held GSU scoreless for the remainder of the game.
