GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State came from behind in back-to-back games to sweep a doubleheader from the West Liberty University softball team Friday afternoon at Doug Morris Field.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (10-26, 6-10) saw the Pioneers (16-16, 9-7) use a big sixth inning to run away with an 11-5 win in the opener before a late unearned run gave the hosts a 2-1 nod in the finale.
In the first game, Riley Conkle blasted a 3-run home run to give West Liberty a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth but Glenville batted around in the bottom of the sixth, plating seven runs on eight hits to put the game out of reach.
Kayla Mancuso, Anna Welsh and Jaden Conrad all doubled in a losing cause for the Black and Gold.
Cassie Bauer's RBI double in the top of the second gave WLU an early 1-0 lead but Pioneer pitcher Kylie Burdick slammed the door the rest of the way, holding the Hilltoppers hitless over the final five frames.
Leah Alford took the hard-luck loss in the circle for West Liberty. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, an infield error opened the door for Glenville to break the tie with an unearned run.
The West Liberty women look to get back on track Saturday with a road doubleheader at Concord.
