WLU Softball Clinches MEC Tournament Berth

Hilltoppers Sweep Notre Dame on Senior Day

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The resurgent West Liberty University softball team celebrated Senior Day in style on Saturday, clinching a Mountain East Conference Tournament berth with a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame in a mutual regular season finale at the WLU Softball Complex.

    Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (16-36, 10-20) rolled to a 6-0 shutout win in the opener before walking off the Falcons (29-25, 18-14) in a thrilling second game by a 3-2 score.

    In the first game, Madison Angus hurled a six-hit shutout and her teammates exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to win going away. Angus struck out two and walked two while scattering six singles.

    Sidney Little had a two-run single and Mallory Rosnick doubled home a run while Riley Conkle, Grace Swigart and Madge Weidner all had RBI singles in the sixth.

    In the nightcap, West Liberty pitcher Ashlyn Tapman took a 2-0 lead into the fifth on the strength of an RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Little. Notre Dame scratched out a pair of runs to tie it in the top of the fifth and the score remained tied into the seventh.

    With two out in the bottom of the seventh, the game was one strike away from heading to extra innings when Conkle turned on an 0-2 pitch and hammered it deep over the left-centerfield fence for a walk-off home run.

    Tapman earned her second straight complete-game win, striking out two and walking two while giving up just five singles. Sydney Johnson had a pair of singles for the Black and Gold.

    The 2023 MEC Softball Tournament will be held May 5-7 at the Botetourt Softball Complex in Troutville, Va. Pairings and game times will be announced later this week.
