WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team split a Mountain East Conference North Division twinbill with Notre Dame here Sunday at a chilly Kovalick Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (15-24, 10-12) got off to a good start with a 6-4 win in the first game but the visiting Falcons (10-25, 10-12) bounced back to take a 7-0 nod in the finale.
In the opener, West Liberty opened up a big lead after the first three innings and held on for the win despite being limited to only four hits in the game.
Two of those hits came in the bottom of the first and they were big ones. Trevor Thomas opened the scoring with a two-run double to left and Will Balgo delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single up the middle to jump start the Hilltoppers.
Jake Sherman added an RBI double in the second and WLU tacked on an unearned run in the third to build a 6-1 lead. Four of the Black and Gold's runs were unearned.
Justin Pennybacker hurled the first six innings to get the win. Thomas worked the seventh to earn the save, giving up two hits but striking out a pair to slam the door.
Notre Dame ace Johnny Anservitz proved too hot for West Liberty to handle in the second game. The hard-throwing righthander struck out 11 Hilltoppers while walking just one and scattering five hits in a complete-game shutout.
Balgo had two more singles for the Black and Gold while Sherman added a double and single.
Both teams will return to Kovalick Field on Monday for another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
