Hilltopper Softball Splits With Fairmont State

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty and Fairmont State softball teams split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at a sun-splashed WLU Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.

    Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (10-22, 6-6) handed the Falcons (18-14, 8-4) an 8-1 setback in the opener before seeing a late rally fall just short in the second game, coming out on the short end of a 6-5 tally.

    Savannah Holbrook drove in four runs with a home run and double to pace the WLU attack in the first game. Madison Angus pitched into the fifth inning to earn her fourth win of the season. Brooke Perri came on with one out in the fifth and shut the Falcons out the rest of the way. Kayla Mancuso and Makayla Blair each singled twice for the Hilltoppers and Grace Swigart had an RBI single.

    Fairmont State carried a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning of the second game before the West Liberty bats rumbled to life. Jaden Conrad and Sara Simon wrapped RBI singles around a Riley Conkle sacrifice fly to cut the margin to 6-5 and put the winning run in scoring position at second base with two out.

    At that point, starting pitcher Jordan Popowski re-entered the game for the visitors and struck out the final batter to preserve the win.

    Simon keyed the West Liberty attack with three singles and two RBIs. Conrad had a solo homer to go along with her RBI single and Conkle had a single to accompany her sacrifice fly.

    The Hilltoppers will be back on their home diamond Monday afternoon when they host Frostburg State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
