Bobcat Pitchers Silence West Liberty Bats

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan pitching staff held West Liberty to just six hits here Sunday in sweeping a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at the WLU Softball Complex.

The powerful Bobcats (34-11, 19-5), listed among teams receiving votes in the most recent national Top 25, led wire-to-wire in handing Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (12-32, 8-16) a pair of tough losses by scores of 5-2 and 6-1.

In the opener, Wesleyan blanked WLU on just two hits over the first six innings and took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. West Liberty picked up two more hits and pushed a pair of unearned runs across the plate but it was too little, too late for the hosts.

Riley Conkle accounted for half of the Hilltoppers' hits with a double and a single while Sara Simon and Mahayla McCroskey each singled and drove in a run.

In the second game, the Bobcats' Savannah O'Shields held WLU to just two hits and one unearned run while striking out seven in a strong performance.

Kayla Mancuso broke up O'Shields' no-hit bid with a double to left-center leading off the fourth but the Wesleyan standout retired the next three batters in order to end the threat.

West Liberty scratched out an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to trail just 2-1 heading into the seventh but Wesleyan scored four times in the top of the seventh to put the game on ice.

The Hilltoppers hit the road next weekend for a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader at Fairmont State.
