CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston's men's tennis team flexed its nationally-ranked muscles here Sunday with a 7-0 victory over a regionally-ranked West Liberty University squad at the Schoenbaum Courts.
The Golden Eagles (14-4, 6-0), ranked No. 33 nationally and No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, completed an unbeaten run through their Mountain East Conference schedule with the victory against Coach Ron Hulewicz's Hilltoppers (8-8, 3-3).
Ranked No. 6 in the Atlantic Region, the West Liberty men didn't go down without a fight. Charleston swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point but needed a tiebreaker win against WLU's No. 3 doubles tandem of Derek Roehner and Joao Benvenutti to complete the sweep.
Four of the six singles matches were straight-set wins for UC but Moritz Erpel took his opponent to a third set at No. 1 singles and Zarion Jones did the same in his No. 6 singles match.
The Hilltoppers close out the regular season on Tuesday with a non-conference match against Bluefield State at Vienna, W.Va.
