WLU Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Glenville

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Glenville State here Saturday at Sue Morris Sports Complex on the GSU campus.

The host Pioneers (12-15, 5-5) scored 15 runs and pounded out 23 hits in handing Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (9-16, 5-5) a pair of Mountain East Conference losses by scores of 10-3 and 5-3.

In the opener, West Liberty jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead but couldn't hang on as Glenville struck back with 10 unanswered runs to win going away.

The Hilltoppers plated one run in the top of the first on a bases-loaded walk and scored twice more in the second frame, highlighted by an RBI single from Trevor Thomas, only to see their bats go silent the rest of the way.

Glenville tied it with three runs in the bottom of the second, went ahead to stay with a single tally in the third and put the game out of reach in the fifth, batting around to send six runs across the plate.

Thomas reached base all four times for WLU with his RBI single, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Ryan Talbert and Will Balgo doubled for the Hilltoppers, who were held to just five hits in the game.

West Liberty grabbed another early lead in the finale, taking advantage of some Pioneer control issues to score two runs in the top of the second on a bases-loaded walk and bases-loaded hit by pitch.

Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, that was all the offense they could muster as they were held to just two singles over the final five innings. Meanwhile, Glenville took the lead for good with a three-run uprising in the third inning before adding single tallies in the fifth and sixth. West Liberty got one run back in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate but the Pioneer bullpen escaped with no further damage.

James Salvatori and Ty Helmke each singled and drove in a run for West Liberty, accounting for two of WLU's four singles.

The Hilltoppers will try to get the bats going again on Sunday when they head south to Athens, W.Va. for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Concord.
