MOUNT OLIVE, NC - The West Liberty University softball team snapped a 12-game losing skid with a 2-1 victory over Mount Olive in its weekend finale on Sunday evening in North Carolina.
Game 2: West Liberty (2) - Mount Olive (1)
Senior
Anna Welsh belted a two-run home run in the top of the second inning and that would be all pitchers
Leah Alford and
Madison Angus would need to power the Hilltoppers back into the win column.
Alford tossed 6.1 innings and allowed one run, while scattering seven hits and striking out three. Angus was called upon out of the bullpen after back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh with WLU ahead by a run. It took just two pitches to get the job done for Angus, as shortstop
Jaden Conrad snagged a line drive and doubled off the Mount Olive runner at first firing the final out over to
Cassie Bauer.
Kylie Imes finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate in the three spot for the Hilltoppers.
Avery Becker scored on the Welsh home run after leading off the second inning by drawing a walk on a full count.
The West Liberty defense posted a clean sheet making no errors the third time this season.
Game 1: Mercyhurst (10) - West Liberty (0) F/5
The Hilltoppers were downed in the first matchup on Sunday by run rule in five innings against Mercyhurst. The Lakers threw a no-hitter and
Grace Swigart was the only 'Topper to reach base with a walk in the bottom of the first.
Four different pitchers threw for WLU.
Madison Angus secured the final two outs without allowing a hit, while
Ryleigh Morgan started and suffered the loss.
