Back-to-Back Sweeps for WLU Baseball

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team rode two impressive mound performances to a doubleheader sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan Monday afternoon at Kovalick Field.

Coming off a sweep of Davis & Elkins on Sunday, Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (9-13, 5-3) picked up right where they had left off, knocking off the Bobcats (7-13, 3-5) by scores of 11-3 and 7-0.

In the opener, Drake Dobson fired a complete-game 2-hitter and didn't allow an earned run while the Hilltoppers scored in every inning but the fourth in cruising to the win.

Two WLU errors helped the Bobcats get on the board with three unearned runs in the top of the third but that was all the offense the visitors could muster against the hard-throwing righthander.

Dobson blanked Wesleyan on just one hit over the final four innings, finishing with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Noah Mildren drove in three West Liberty runs with a double and a single while Jake Sherman also had a multi-hit game with a double and single. Trevor Thomas doubled home a pair of runs, Garrett Scott doubled and drove in a run; James Salvatori added an RBI single and Ty Helmke doubled.

Sophomore righthander Ethan Conley and Helmke, a senior centerfielder, led the way in the second game.

Conley held Wesleyan to just four harmless singles while striking out two and walking four in a complete-game shutout.

Helmke had a huge game at the plate, jerking a pair of home runs over the right field wall and tacking on a triple for good measure. Thomas added a pair of singles while Ryan Talbert had a 2-run double and Sherman also doubled in a run.

The Hilltoppers travel to Greensburg, Pa. on Tuesday for a single non-conference game at perennial Atlantic Region power Seton Hill. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
