No. 2 West Liberty Wrestles to Perfect 4-0 Record at Hilltopper Duals

West Liberty, W.Va. – The No. 2 West Liberty University wrestling team improved to 7-2 on the season with a 4-0 showing at the 2023 Hilltopper Duals. The Hilltoppers won 32-of-40 matches on the day with 21 of their victories delivering bonus points. During the day the Black & Gold saw No. 1 Ty McGeary, No. 12 Khyvon Grace, and Mason Christian wrestle to 4-0 records while No. 4 Jamar Williams and No. 4 Francesco Borsellino went 3-0 against their opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. MOUNT UNION
  • Mount Union opened the first dual of the day with a win by fall for Jack Stanley, pinning Alexander Crane in 2:13 to put the Purple Raiders in front 6-0 early after the 125 pound bout.
  • West Liberty took the lead for the first time with a pair of bonus point wins at 133 and 141 pounds as No. 4 Vincent Scollo defeated Nolan Frye by major decision (9-0) and No. 12 Khyvon Grace defeated Mason McCarty by tech fall (16-1).
  • UMU tied the dual at nine apiece with a 13-8 win by decision for Darese Sparkman over Brock Wygle at 149 pounds.
  • In his season debut, No. 4 Jamar Williams earned a 7-2 win by decision over DIII's No. 10 ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, Nick Nettleton.
  • No. 9 Alec Cook tallied the second tech fall of the dual for WLU, defeating Evan Brickman 15-0 at 165 pounds.
  • The Black & Gold notched back-to-back wins by fall at 174 and 184 pounds as Christian Chavez pinned Caleb Zimmerman in 2:44 and No. 1 Ty McGeary pinned Bryce McCloskey in 5:45.
  • Mason Christian recorded the third tech fall of the dual for West Liberty with a 19-3 win over Nick Chaddock at 197 pounds.
  • For the third consecutive match to open the season, No. 4 Francesco Borsellino ended his bout in under a minute as he won by fall over Terrance Davis in 0:47.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. NO. 11 MILLERSVILLE
  • In the 125 pound weight class, West Liberty's Alexander Crane earned a win by injury default in 6:51.
  • The Hilltoppers earned back-to-back wins by decision in the 133 and 141 pound weight classes as No. 4 Vincent Scollo earned a top-5 victory, defeating No. 3 Bryce Beatty by a score of 8-1, and No. 12 Khyvon Grace earned a 7-3 win over Aidan Micheli.
  • Millersville cut their deficit in half with a win by fall at 149 pounds as No. 8 Craig Cook pinned Brock Wygle in 1:46.
  • No. 4 Jamar Williams earned another win by decision in his season debut as he defeated Nicholas Bennet 9-6 to extend the dual lead for WLU to 15-6.
  • No. 6 Brandon Connor collected the second and final win of the dual for the Marauders as he defeated No. 9 Alec Cook by decision, 5-2, in a top-10 battle.
  • Christian Chavez needed overtime to defeat Jonathan Parrilla, winning 4-1 in sudden victory-1 to get the Hilltoppers back on track to close out the dual.
  • No. 1 Ty McGeary got the better of No. 8 Anthony Giampietro in the third head-to-head ranked battle between the Hilltoppers and Marauders, winning by a 9-5 decision.
  • Excluding the injury default to start the match, Mason Christian tallied the lone bonus point win of the dual for West Liberty as he won in an 11-2 major decision over Riley O'Boyle.
  • Having to wrestle the full seven minutes for the first time this season, No. 4 Francesco Borsellino capped off the Hilltoppers 28-9 victory over the No. 11 Marauders with a hard fought 3-1 win by decision over Bishop McCoy.

  • Alexander Crane got things rolling for West Liberty in their first match-up with another MEC foe this season, earning a 2-0 win by decision over Acxel Barrios.
  • No. 4 Vincent Scollo suffered an upset at 133 pounds as he fell in a 9-7 decision to Thierno Diallo to even the match at three apiece.
  • No. 12 Khyvon Grace continued his momentum with his third win of the day, a convincing 18-2 win by tech fall over Logan Intrieri at 141 pounds.
  • The Bobcats continued to respond as Gage Heilbrun evened the dual back at eight points apiece following his own 17-0 tech fall win over Brock Wygle 149 pounds.
  • Following a win by forfeit for Jamar Williams at 157 pounds, No. 9 Alec Cook recorded the first of four wins by fall for the Hilltoppers to close the dual, pinning Liam Debaugh in 5:57 at 165 pounds.
  • Christian Chavez and Ty McGeary made it three consecutive pins for the Black & Gold as Chavez won by fall in 1:51 over Duncan Kammar at 174 pounds and McGeary won by fall in 2:48 over Nick McCarthy at 184 pounds.
  • Mason Christian secured his third bonus point win of the afternoon with a 13-0 win by major decision over William Applegarth at 197 pounds.
  • Jamie Kilmer got in on the action of bonus point victories as he capped off a 42-8 victory over Frostburg State with a win by fall over William Longhurst in 4:09.

  • Alexander Crane ended his day with a 10-3 win by decision over Colin Mellott to improve to 3-1 on the day and put West Liberty in front following the 125 pound bout.
  • The Hilltoppers were open in the 133 pound bout, allowing Dylan Le to win by forfeit.
  • No. 12 Khyvon Grace notched his third tech fall of the day and improved to 4-0 on the day with a 19-1 win over Dru Baker at 141 pounds.
  • Brock Wygle recorded the first of two falls for the Hilltoppers against the Polar Bears, pinning Colton Spurgeon in 2:08 for WLU to regain the dual lead 8-6.
  • Jayden Jones earned the lone, non-forfeit, win for Ohio Northern as he won by tech fall 19-2 over Armon Nettey.
  • No. 9 Alec Cook collected his second tech fall and third bonus point win of the day with a 18-0 win over Kael Margraf to move to end the day 3-1 overall.
  • Caden Kenworthy earned a 9-5 win by decision over Adam Myers to push the WLU lead to 22-11 in the dual.
  • No. 1 Ty McGeary ended the day 4-0 to remain undefeated on the season defeating Gavin Layman 6-1 in the 184 pound bout.
  • Mason Christian also ended the day 4-0, earning his second tech fall and fourth bonus point with a 20-4 victory over Ajay Locke.
  • No. 4 Francesco Borsellino ended the day 3-0 with his second win by fall, pinning Hunter Probasco in 1:40.
