No. 2 West Liberty Set to Host 2023 Hilltopper Duals

West Liberty, W.Va. – The No. 2 West Liberty University wrestling team will compete in a total of four duals on Sunday when they host the 2023 Hilltopper Duals. The Black & Gold will open the day against Mount Union (DIII) at 9:30 a.m. and will follow that dual with match-ups against No. 11 Millersville, Frostburg State, and No. 18 Ohio Northern (DIII).

#2 WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Sunday with a 3-2 record in dual meet competition following a come from behind 22-19 win on the road at (RV) Findlay last weekend.
  • The No. 2 team in the NWCA Division II Coaches' Poll, the Hilltoppers are tied for the most individuals ranked with seven.
  • Alexander Crane enters the 125 pound bouts with a record of 1-7 on the season. His lone win of the year came at the Findlay Open in a 7-6 win by decision over Nicholas Barber of Ashland. In his last outing he fell in a 15-6 major decision to No. 9 Graham Shore of Findlay last weekend.
  • At 133 pounds, Vincent Scollo is the No. 4 wrestler in the country after an 8-2 start to the season. He remained undefeated up until a hard fought 3-2 loss by decision to DI Drexel's John Hildebrandt and then suffered his second straight loss last weekend when he dropped a 2-1 decision to Gavin Ritter of Findlay. He owns a pair of bonus point wins this season, both of which occurred en route to a Findley Open title.
  • Khyvan Grace, the No. 12 wrestler at 141 pounds, has posted a record of 7-4 to open the season. He owns one ranked win and a win over a DI opponent this season, defeating No. 3 Jake Niffennegger of Mercyhurst at the Findlay Open and Tre Varndell of Clarion at the Drexel Duals. Grace has one bonus point win this season. In his last outing he won 3-2 in tiebreaker-1 over Ashton Anderson of Findlay last Sunday.
  • At 149 pounds for West Liberty, it will be Brock Wygle who has posted a record of 2-7 in 2023-24. Both of his wins came at the Mount Union Open where he went 2-2 with a pair of pins. In his most recent outing on Sunday, he lost 19-3 by tech fall to Logan Sanom of Findlay.
  • At 157 pounds it will be No. 4 Jamar Williams who will make his season debut for the Hilltoppers after a trip to the national tournament a year ago.
  • At 165 pounds, Alec Cook remains in the national rankings at No. 9 in the country with a 7-4 start to the season. He was one of several wrestlers to go 1-1 against NCAA Division I competition two weeks ago as he picked up an 8-3 win by decision over Trevor Elfvin of Clarion. He now owns four bonus point victories on the year after a 19-4 win by tech fall his most recent outing against Cade Cass of Findlay last weekend.
  • At 174 pounds for WLU it will be Christian Chavez, a freshman who owns an 8-7 record this season at the 174 and 184 pound weight classes. He has earned three wins at both the Mount Union Invite and Findlay Open, while picking up two more at the Little State Invite. He has posted four bonus point wins this year. In his last outing at Findlay on Sunday, he lost by an 11-4 decision to Kenny Snyder.
  • Ty McGeary remains the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 184 pounds with a 10-0 start to the season. The 2-time MEC Wrestler of the Week in 2023-24 owns seven bonus point wins this season after a 17-2 win by tech fall over Andrew Knick of Findlay.
  • Another freshman in the lineup is Mason Christian, who has battled to an 8-3 record to start the year at 197 pounds. Four of his wins came at the Mount Union Open as he went a perfect 4-0 to win the title. He also went 3-2 at the Findlay Open for a fourth place finish at the invitational. He owns three bonus point victories this season. He played a pivotal role for the Hilltoppers in their come from behind victory against Findlay last weekend, winning 6-3 in sudden victory-1 over Jacob Kowalski to keep WLU's hopes alive.
  • Francesco Borselino, the No. 4 ranked wrestler at 285 pounds, has made quick work of his first two appearances this season as he has ended both matches in less than 40 seconds to secure dual wins. He won by fall over Parker Wood of Mercyhurst in nine seconds and Guilian Bodiu of Findlay in 34 seconds. He became the third different Hilltopper to be named the MEC Wrestler of the Week on Monday afternoon following Sunday's win against the Oilers.
  • Danny Irwin is in his fifth season as the head coach at West Liberty, leading the Hilltoppers to a 47-17 dual meet record and three consecutive top-6 finishes at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Overall, Irwin enters his seventh season as a head coach after spending his first two seasons at Wheeling and has compiled a 67-26 career dual meet record and four total top-6 national championship finishes.
