Underwood Breaks MEC Career Saves Record in Heartbreaking Shootout Loss

Elkins, W.Va. – Looking for their first-ever MEC Tournament win in program history, the West Liberty University men's soccer team battled through 110 minutes of action to draw 0-0 but would fall in a heartbreaking 5-4 shootout that advanced Davis & Elkins into the semifinal round of the conference tournament. As the lone remaining member of the original team in 2018, Noah Underwood continued to leave an impact and put his team in a position to win by making 13 saves on the night which pushed him atop the career saves record in Mountain East Conference history with 336, surpassing the previous record of 334 set by Kyle Brown of Concord (2017-21).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • West Liberty recorded a pair of shots-on-goal in the first half as Linus Ebert tallied the first shot of the game for either team in the 6th minute, firing the ball straight away center towards the net. The Hilltoppers second shot-on-goal in the game came in the 39th minute as Zachary Forehand placed a shot towards the upper right portion of the net as he cut towards the goal entering the right side of the 18 yard box.
  • Forehand recorded the lone shot-on-target of the second half for WLU, as he placed the ball towards the bottom right corner of the net in the 66th minute. He had one final look at the goal towards the end of regulation as his shot hit off the top woodwork in the 88th minute.
  • The Hilltoppers recorded one shot-on-goal in each of the overtime periods, with Vitor Otsuka firing a shot over the head of a D&E defender and towards the center of the net in the 99th minute. In the second overtime Zachary Jordan placed a shot towards the bottom center of the net off a free kick in the 109th minute.
  • In the best-of-5 shootout Mark Donnelly answered the first Davis & Elkins make by putting the ball in the right side of the net. On the second shot attempt for the Senators, Noah Underwood made the stop on the shot attempt by Johan Magana before a retake was issued and Magana made the best of the opportunity and put the ball in the right side of the net. Ebert, Rhys Lewis, and Jasper Newton answered goals by D&E and left the shootout even at four apiece entering the final frame. For the Senator's fifth shot, Dominique Castano used a stutter step to throw off Underwood's timing and put the ball into the right side of the goal, putting Davis & Elkins in front 5-4. On the fifth shootout attempt for the Black & Gold, Otsuka went to the left but saw his shot blocked by D&E's Grant Wyles.
  • Davis & Elkins held the advantage in shots (27-8) and shots-on-goal (13-5) while West Liberty held the edge in saves (13-5). The teams were even with four corner kicks apiece.
