Hilltoppers Host Glenville State in Wednesday Night Soccer Action

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team will play their second consecutive match at home on Wednesday evening when they welcome Glenville State to town. The Hilltoppers and Pioneers are set for a 6 p.m. kickoff at the West Family Athletic Complex.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Wednesday's match with a record of 3-4-2 (2-3-1 MEC) on the season and are third in the North Division of the Mountain East Conference standings with seven points.
  • The Hilltoppers remained undefeated at home with a 2-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon, improving to 3-0-2 on the hilltop this season. The past two season's WLU has started 4-1 (2021) and 3-1-1 (2022) respectively in their first five home matches.
  • Amelia Compston leads West Liberty in goals (5), assists (3), and points (13) this season, ranking tied for fourth, tied for seventh, and fourth respectively in each category among the MEC leaders.
  • Morgan Kost is second on the team with four goals, two of which were game-winners and is tied for the second most in the MEC this year. Katie Farley, Mia Zecca, and Asia Espiritu have each found the back of the net three times.
  • In total ten players have collected an assist this season, while Farley, Zecca, and Maya Taggart are the only other three to have multiple with two in 2023.
  • Zara Wickert has started seven games in goal for West Liberty and has made eight appearances on the season, totaling 651 minutes of playing time while making 48 saves on 129 shots faced. GLENVILLE STATE STORYLINES
  • Glenville State enters Wednesday's match with a record of 3-4-2 (1-4-1 MEC) on the season and are tied for fourth in the South Division of the Mountain East Conference standings with four points.
  • The Pioneers went on the road to defeat Salem on Sunday afternoon, downing the Tigers 7-0 in the match. Merel Smets highlighted the win by notching a hat-trick with three goals and an assist.
  • Smets leads the Pioneers and is tied for second among the MEC leaders with seven goals and 15 points this season, she has also added one assist.
  • The only other Glenville State athlete to record multiple goals this year is Aitana Viejo who has found the back of the net four times, while also leading the team with three assists. Overall she has notched 11 points.
  • Abigail Morales has started and played in eight matches for GSU this season, totaling 711 minutes while making 19 saves on 59 shots faced. She has posted a 0.613 save percentage and 1.52 goals against average while recording three shutouts.
  • Through nine matches Glenville State holds the advantage in shots (103-89), shots-on-goal (63-44), and corner kicks (42-32), while their opponents hold the edge in goals (18-15), assists (12-10), and saves (48-25).
  • J.R. Dodson is in his third season as the head coach at Glenville State with a record of 7-36-2 during his time with the Pioneers.
SERIES HISTORY
  • West Liberty holds the 4-1 advantage in the series since 2018 and is 4-0 in matches played on the hilltop.
