Manheim, Pa. - The storied tradition of the West Liberty University wrestling team has reached yet another milestone, as they enter the 2023-24 season with their highest ranking in program history in the NWCA Division II Coaches Poll at No. 2 in the country. The Hilltoppers had previously been ranked third in the nation on two occasions during their time as a DII member, first on February 18, 1997, and most recently February 17, 2023, when they tied for third. Today also marks the 13th consecutive poll that the Black & Gold have been ranked in the top-10, dating back to final rankings of the 2020-21 regular season.
“I know recognition is nice, but since March this program has put in the time to have the next best year yet” stated head coach Danny Irwin. “We are focused on doing the day to day details to make these rankings wrong and come out on the top in March!”
West Liberty enters the season searching for the first team national title in program history, having finished within the top-6 of the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championship the past three seasons.
