Hilltoppers Travel North to Face Notre Dame in Sunday Afternoon MEC Match

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team looks to record the season sweep of Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon after they notched the program's first-ever win over NDC earlier in the season. The Hilltoppers and Falcons are set for a 12 p.m. kickoff at Mueller Field in South Euclid, Ohio.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Sunday's match with a record of 5-6-3 (4-5-2 MEC) on the season and is third in the North Division of the Mountain East Conference standings with 14 points.
  • The Hilltoppers dropped their second consecutive match, and first at the West Family Athletic Complex this season, on Wednesday evening, falling to Fairmont State 4-3 as the Falcons scored the game-winning goal with ten seconds remaining.
  • Amelia Compston leads the team with seven goals this season while Kost has added six goals on the year. Kost is also tied for third in the conference with three game-winning goals on the year. Kost is the only player in WLU history to record multiple multi-goal games in a single season, with two against Salem and West Virginia State.
  • Eight other Hilltoppers have found the back of the net in 2023, with Mia Zecca (4), Asia Espiritu (4), Katie Farley (3), Isabella Aperfine (2), Maya Taggart (2), and Ellie Cunningham (2) each scoring multiple goals.
  • Compston and Aperfine have recorded a team-best three assists. They are two of 11 players to record an assist for the Black & Gold this season. Farley, Zecca, Rileigh Gualtiere, and Maya Taggart have each collected a pair of assists.
  • Overall, Compston is responsible for a team-high 17 points (7 goals, 3 assists) and Kost has added 13 points (6 goals, 1 assist).
  • Zara Wickert has started 12 games in goal for West Liberty and has made 13 appearances on the season, totaling 1,101 minutes of playing time while making 80 saves on 213 shots faced. Wickert has posted a 0.808 save percentage and a 1.55 goals-against average while recording three shutouts. She currently ranks second in both total saves and saves per game (6.15). Wickert has notched three double digit save performances this season.

NOTRE DAME STORYLINES
  • Notre Dame enters Sunday's match with a record of 7-4-3 (6-4-1 MEC) on the season and is second in the North Division of the Mountain East Conference standings with 19 points.
  • The Falcons saw their 3-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon as they dropped a 1-0 decision at home against Frostburg State. It was NDC first home loss of the season as they are now 4-1-2 on the year.
  • Miriam Szijarto is the conference leader in goals this season, finding the back of the net 12 times. Szijarto is also the MEC leader with six game-winning goals in 2023. Mia Maruna (3), Sophia Motolese (2), and Savannah Singh (2) have each scored multiple goals this season as well.
  • Louisa Follert is one of five Falcons to record two or more assists on the year with a team-high of four, while Motolese (3), Szijarto (2), Ashley Rainho (2), and Drew Blair (2) have also recorded multiple assists.
  • Szijarto leads the team and MEC with 26 points off 12 goals and a pair of assists.
  • Jordan Pasalaqua has started and played in all 14 matches for Notre Dame this season, totaling 1,215 minutes while making 69 saves on 168 shots faced. She has posted a 0.831 save percentage and 1.04 goals-against average. She has collected three shutouts and was a part of one combined shutout. Pasalaqua ranks third in the MEC in both save percentage and total saves.
