Hilltoppers Look to Avenge Early Season Loss to Fairmont State in Wednesday Clash

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team looks to even the season series and return to the win column as they host Fairmont State on Wednesday evening. The Hilltoppers and Falcons are set for a 6 p.m. kickoff at the West Family Athletic Complex in the final home midweek game of the season for WLU.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Wednesday's match with a record of 5-5-3 (4-4-2 MEC) on the season and is third in the North Division of the Mountain East Conference standings with 14 points.
  • The Hilltoppers saw their 4-game point streak come to an end this past weekend as they fell in a 1-0 decision at Concord.
  • WLU has remained unbeaten at home this season, posting a record of 4-0-3 at the West Family Athletic Complex. The Black & Gold are one win away from tying the program record for most home wins in a season, which was set in 2021 with five.
  • Amelia Compston and Morgan Kost are tied for the team lead with six goals apiece this season, tying for eighth in the MEC. Kost is also tied for second in the conference with three game-winning goals on the year. Kost is also the only player in WLU history to record multiple multi-goal games in a single season, with two against Salem and West Virginia State.
  • Eight other Hilltoppers have found the back of the net in 2023, with Asia Espiritu (4), Katie Farley (3), Mia Zecca (3), Isabella Aperfine (2), and Ellie Cunningham (2) each scoring multiple goals.
  • Compston has recorded a team-best three assists. She is one of 11 players to record an assist for the Black & Gold this season. Farley, Zecca, Aperfine, Rileigh Gualtiere, and Maya Taggart have each collected a pair of assists.
  • Overall, Compston is responsible for a team-high 15 points (6 goals, 3 assists) and Kost has added 13 points (6 goals, 1 assist).
  • Zara Wickert has started 11 games in goal for West Liberty and has made 12 appearances on the season, totaling 1,011 minutes of playing time while making 71 saves on 188 shots faced. Wickert has posted an .826 save percentage and a 1.33 goals against average while recording three shutouts. She currently ranks second in both total saves and saves per game (5.92). Wickert has notched three double digit save performances this season.

  • Alejandra Puerto is one of four players on the team with multiple goals on the season, leading the way with four scores. Kiera Kuzinski (3), Kylee Kosek (3), and Ava Behr (2) have also found the back of the net multiple times in 2023.
  • Isabella Maldonado leads the Falcons and is second in the MEC with five assists this year, while Gabi Madrid and Gracie Smith have each notched a pair of assists.
  • Puerto has recorded a team-high of eight points (4 goals), while Maldonado (1 goal, 5 assists) and Kuzinski (3 goals, 1 assist) have each collected seven points.
