Hilltoppers Set to Battle Davis & Elkins on the Hilltop

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team is back at home at the West Family Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening, hosting Davis & Elkins. The Hilltoppers and Senators are set for a 5 p.m. kickoff on the hilltop in MEC action.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Wednesday's match with a record of 4-4-3 (3-3-2 MEC) on the season and is third in the North Division of the Mountain East Conference standings with 11 points.
  • The Hilltoppers notched their first road victory of the season on Sunday evening as they handed West Virginia State their first home loss of the year, a 2-1 decision with a pair of goals by Morgan Kost.
  • Kost has tallied a team-best six goals in 2023, tying for seventh in the MEC. She became the first player in program history to record multiple multi-goal games in the same season with two against the Yellow Jackets. Three of Kost's goals this season have been game-winners, which is tied for the second most in the league.
  • Ten Hilltoppers have found the back of the net this year with seven players scoring two or more goals. Amelia Compston is second on the team with five goals, while Katie Farley, Mia Zecca, and Asia Espiritu have each scored three goals.
  • Ten players have also collected an assist this season, led by Compston with a team high of three which is tied for the ninth most in the conference. Farley, Zecca, Isabella Aperfine, and Maya Taggart are the other four to have multiple with two on the year.
  • Overall, Compston is responsible for a team-best 13 points (5 goals, 3 assists) and Kost has added 12 points (6 goals).
  • Zara Wickert has started nine games in goal for West Liberty and has made ten appearances on the season, totaling 831 minutes of playing time while making 55 saves on 152 shots faced. Wickert has posted a .797 save percentage and a 1.52 goals against average while recording a pair of shutouts. She currently ranks second in total saves (55) and is third in the league in save percentage (0.797) and saves per game (5.50).
  • Through 11 matches West Liberty has held the advantage over their opponents in goals (27-19), assists (16-13), and saves (65-58) while their opponents hold the edge in shots (179-156) and corner kicks (47-44). The teams have been even with 85 shots-on-goal apiece on the year.
DAVIS & ELKINS STORYLINES
  • Davis & Elkins enters Wednesday's match with a record of 2-8-1 (1-6-1 MEC) on the season and is fifth in the South Division of the Mountain East Conference standings with four points.
  • The Senators dropped their third consecutive match and fell to 0-5 on the road this season as they lost 3-1 at Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon.
  • Alexa Karsel leads D&E in goals (9), assists (4), and points (22). In the MEC she is currently the league leader in points while tying for the most goals and seventh most assists.
  • While ten other players have scored a goal in 2023, Madison Rose and Jimena Guerrero are the only other players to find the back of the net multiple times this season with three and two respectively.
  • No other players have multiple assists this season as Rose, Ciara Casamento, Catalina Salas, Andrea Stanziola, Sage Bechtold, and Vivian Kerr have each tallied one assist.
  • Gabriela Acevedo has started and played in eight matches for D&E this season, totaling 675 minutes while making 47 saves on 130 shots faced. She has posted a .691 save percentage and 2.80 goals against average. She ranks second in the MEC with 5.88 saves per game and is fourth in total saves.
  • Through 11 matches Davis & Elkins' opponents hold the advantage in goals (39-22), assists (32-10), shots (209-118), shots-on-goal (109-70), and corner kicks (61-36) while the Senators hold the edge in saves (70-48).
