Soccer Doubleheader on Tap for This Evening at West Family Athletic Complex

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University soccer programs are set to play a doubleheader this evening at West Family Athletic Complex.The men's game will be first at 5 pm and the women will follow at 7:30 with both teams taking on Notre Dame College.

Men's Preview (Game Notes)
West Liberty has played all MEC contests through the early part of the season. One of each result has occurred in the order of loss, win, tie. The lone loss was against #2 Charleston on the road in the season opener. A dominating 4-1 victory was the Hilltoppers home opener versus Concord. Then, a scoreless draw was most recently against Frostburg State. WLU has scored all its season goals in the match versus Concord. It has led in shots in each of the last two matches, 9-6 over Concord and 8-6 versus FSU.

For the first time in program history, the Hilltoppers are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region Poll. West Liberty was ranked 9th in the region in the first edition of the poll this season, released on Tuesday. Notre Dame is 10th in the region.

Notre Dame enters with an even record of 2-2 with both losses coming on the road. However, both road contests were against nationally ranked opponents, a a 4-0 loss to #10 Davis & Elkins and a 2-0 loss to #2 Charleston. The lone conference win came against Wheeling in a 3-0 result at home. In their wins they have not allowed a goal this season and in their losses they have not scored a goal this season. The Falcons swept the series last year with 6-2 and 4-1 wins.

Women's Preview (Game Notes)
West Liberty will play its first MEC match tonight. The non-conference slate ended with a 1-1 record for the young Hilltoppers. The Black and Gold controlled possession of the ball throughout the match against Salem on Saturday. They outshot the Tigers 17-2 and 10-1 on goal, but were not able to find the back of the net until the 75th minute when Anne Williams took advantage of a misplay by the goalkeeper and kicked it in. Compston added an insurance goal just before the final minute of play after beating a defender inside the box. Compston led the offense with five shots in the win. The season opener was a defensive battle, only mustering two shots by West Liberty and one on goal. Seton Hill took the match 2-0 with a goal in the fifth minute and one more in the second half after a turnover deep in the Hilltopper defensive zone.

Notre Dame enters also with a 1-1 record, all coming in non-conference action. The Falcons downed Edinboro, 2-0, at home in the opener and lost 4-1 on the road to Tiffin this past Sunday.  All three of their goals have come in the first half this season. The four allowed came unanswered from Tiffin, including three in a 16 minute span early in the second half of their match. 

Two ties were battled out last season. It was 1-1 in the most recent matchup at home and the road match was a double OT 0-0 tie. Alyssa Rhinaman had the lone goal for the Hilltoppers in the series last year. Notre Dame held the shot advantage 8-6 and 8-7, respectively in the matchups.
