WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals to take down Alderson Broaddus, 2-1, this evening at West Family Athletic Complex.
Isabella Bankovich netted the game-winning goal in the 61st minute and assisted on the other to lead the Hilltoppers.
The Battlers (0-5-3, 0-5-2) Â got ahead early, scoring on their first shot of the match in the 23rd minute.Â
West Liberty (3-4-1, 2-3-1) answered about 10 minutes later with a header by
Amelia Compston. Bankovich sent a free kick from just inside the midfield circle perfectly off the head of Compston in the middle of the 18-yard box. Compston set the free kick up by drawing a Battler penalty on the attack near midfield.
The teams stalled out the rest of the first half with just one more shot being taken by either side, it was a wide left shot by Alderson Broaddus in the 36th minute.
Bankovich put the Hilltoppers ahead off a free kick a couple yards out of the box. The sophomore needed no help this time as she snuck the kick inside the back post for her first career goal.
The WLU defense held the Battlers to just three shots in the match and one on goal. The Hilltoppers racked up 14 shots and eight on goal, led by Compston with five and three on net.
The Black and Gold had the pressure on the AB defense all night, totaling eight corner kicks which ties a season-high.
West Liberty will be home again on Saturday when they host Charleston for a 1 pm kickoff at West Family Athletic Complex.
