WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University women's soccer team lost a 1-0 match to Frostburg State tonight at West Family Athletic Complex.
Frostburg State rattled off 16 shots and 10 on goal, but the Hilltopper defense was able to stand strong allowing just one goal to the high-powered offense.
The Bobcats entered the match with 15 goals over four matches, but struggled to find the net against WLU. They broke through in the 35th minute after a battle for possession of a corner kick into the box went to the Bobcats and was kicked in.
Zara Wickert made eight saves in the match and got help from
Zayne Brakeall on the ninth save for West Liberty. Brakeall headed out a Frostburg State shot in the 23rd minute to keep the match scoreless at that point.
Wickert was active all night intercepting crosses and limiting chances alongside a strong back line for West Liberty. The most impressive effort of the night was an unthinkable penalty kick save for Wickert one-on-one against the Bobcats top goal scorer in the 65th minute to keep it a one-goal match.
The Hilltoppers were not able to keep the ball in the offensive end much all night, as Frostburg State controlled possession. West Liberty got just two shots off in the match with both coming in the second half.
Amelia Compston had the lone shot on goal in the 89th minute and
Mia Zecca potentially had the best opportunity of the match for WLU but missed wide left in the 62nd minute.
West Liberty begins a three-game road trip on Sunday with a matchup at Fairmont State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm.
