Fairmont State Prevails in Game 2 Slugfest

CADIZ, Ohio – The West Liberty University baseball team lost both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon. Wet grounds at Kovalick Field forced a change of venue to Mazeroski Field at Sally Buffalo Park where the Falcons prevailed by scores of 7-1 and 11-8.
In the opener, the Falcons (26-17, 21-7) belted three home runs – two by Zach Musgrove – and the Hilltoppers (11-35, 11-17) were held scoreless until finally breaking through with a single tally in the bottom of the seventh.
Zach Hawkins and Brad Goodyear doubled for the Black and Gold. Jake Sherman singled and plated WLU's lone run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The second game was a slugfest from the start. After Fairmont scored seven runs in the first two innings, the Hilltoppers answered with a five-run uprising in the third but never quite got over the hump despite pounding out 15 hits.
Ty Helmke smacked out four singles and scored two runs while Sherman and Hawkins each singled twice and drove in a run. Jarrett Delbrugge had two singles and scored twice, Kayne McGee crushed a two-run home run, Goodyear added a single and two RBIs and Ryan Talbert had a single and an RBI.
The Hilltoppers return to action on Friday when they travel to Wheeling for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the I-470 Fields.
