West Liberty's Brady Shuts Out Falcons

AVON, Ohio – Ian Brady fired a complete-game shutout and the West Liberty University baseball team snapped Notre Dame's five-game winning streak with a 4-0 win here Saturday in the second game of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Mercy Health Stadium.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (6-24, 6-8) had to settle for a split in the afternoon twinbill as the host Falcons (13-17, 9-5) had rallied to a 10-9 extra-inning victory in the first game.
Brady had to pitch around seven singles in his route-going performance, giving up at least one hit in six of the seven frames, but the veteran right-hander didn't walk a batter and his Black and Gold teammates played errorless defense behind him.
West Liberty did most of its damage in the top of the third inning when Brad Goodyear's two-out, two-run double highlighted a three-run uprising to give Brady a 3-0 cushion. The Hilltoppers tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Sherman, who had forced in the game's first run with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the third.
Goodyear had a single to go along with his double while Zack Hawkins went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the WLU attack.
In the opener, Nick Farrell drove an 0-1 pitch over the centerfield wall to lead off the bottom of the eighth as Notre Dame walked off the Hilltoppers for a come-from-behind win.
West Liberty starter Justin Pennybacker carried a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth only to run out of gas, loading the bases with none out. The WLU bullpen couldn't slam the door as the Falcons cut the lead to 9-8 with a four-run uprising and scratched out another tally in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
West Liberty went down in order in the top of the eighth, setting the stage for Farrell's walk-off blast.
Kayne McGee's grand slam home run highlighted a 5-run first inning for West Liberty. Connor Ferguson also homered and drove in two runs while Brad Goodyear added a double, single and RBI. Ty Helmke chipped in with an RBI double and Kaden Blomquist added a run-scoring single.
The teams return to Mercy Health Stadium on Sunday for another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
