FROSTBURG, Md. – The West Liberty University softball team split a doubleheader at Mountain East Conference North Division rival Frostburg State on Saturday.
    Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (17-12-1, 7-3) rallied for a 7-3 win in the first game but the host Bobcats (13-8, 8-2) came from behind for a 5-2 win in the nightcap.
    In the opener, Katie Beeman snapped a 3-3 deadlock with a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh. Grace Swigart followed with a double and later came around to score on an error as WLU pulled away for the crucial division win.
    Frostburg State had homered twice in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead but WLU scored twice in the top of the fifth to even the count.
    Makenzie Amend and Taylor Bonnett combined for 12 strikeouts and no walks in the circle for the Black and Gold. Bonnett pitched the last three innings to get the win.
    Beeman had a big game at the plate, driving in four runs with a home run and a single. Swigart had a single to go along with her seventh-inning double and Jairika Baylor singled twice. Annie Paterson chipped in with an RBI single and Sidney Little doubled for the visitors.
    In the second game, the Hilltoppers squeezed home single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth but the Bobcats scored twice to take the lead and then added a pair of insurance tallies in the sixth to salvage the sweep.
    West Liberty was held to just five hits in the loss. Paterson singled twice and drove in a run while Little added a single and double.
    The Hilltoppers head to Fairmont State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
