Hilltopper Baseball Sweeps Alderson Broaddus

CADIZ, Ohio – The West Liberty University baseball team overcame brutal weather conditions here Monday night to sweep a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from Alderson Broaddus under the lights at Mazeroski Field in Sally Buffalo Park.
The Hilltoppers (9-28, 9-11) handed the Battlers (4-28, 4-16) back-to-back losses by scores of 7-6 and 6-4 to take three of the four games in the weekend series.
After the teams split the first two games of the series on Friday, heavy rains washed out Saturday's scheduled doubleheader and left Kovalick Field unplayable. The teams agreed to reschedule the games for Monday night at Mazeroski Field, a lighted artificial turf surface in the hills of eastern Ohio.
In the first game, West Liberty snapped a 4-4 deadlock with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and added two more tallies in the fifth for a 7-4 lead. Alderson Broaddus struck back with two runs in the top of the seventh but Drake Dobson came out of the bullpen to nail down the final two outs and earn the save.
Logan Grimm worked the first six innings to get the win, striking out 10 and walking four while allowing just four hits. Three of the four runs he was charged with were unearned.
Ty Helmke scored twice and reached base four times on two walks, a double and a single. Ryan Talbert had a pair of singles and an RBI while Kayne McGee and Jarrett Delbrugge each singled and drove in two runs.
With temperatures in the mid-30s, winds from the north and occasional bursts of sleet, the nightcap turned into a 3-hour marathon as the teams combined for 24 strikeouts and 17 bases on balls.
The Hilltoppers were nursing a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning when Brad Goodyear broke the game open with a grand slam deep over the left field fence. The Battlers closed the gap to 6-4 with three runs in the sixth and had the tying runs on base in the seventh before Dobson came in to get the final three outs and earn his second save of the evening.
West Liberty heads to MEC North Division pace-setter Frostburg State this weekend for another four-game series with 1 p.m. doubleheaders set for 1 and 4 p.m.
