INDIANA, Pa. – Colton Burd belted a three-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning here Wednesday afternoon to give Indiana (Pa.) an 8-7 walk-off win against West Liberty in non-conference baseball action at Dougherty Field.
The loss spoiled a stirring comeback by Coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (6-27), who had erupted for three runs in the top of the sixth to overcome a 6-4 deficit and take a 7-6 lead in the scheduled nine-inning game.
The WLU bullpen held the Vulcans (15-15) scoreless through the sixth, seventh and eighth frames only to see the hosts break through in the ninth. A walk and a single put runners on first and second with one out, setting the stage for Burd's game-winning blast.
West Liberty pounded out 14 hits in the frustrating setback.
Brad Goodyear had a three-hit day with a home run and two singles to drive in a pair of runs while
Ty Helmke added a homer, double and two RBIs.
Connor Ferguson had a double and a single.
Kaden Blomquist singled twice and drove in a run,
Jarrett Delbrugge weighed in with an RBI single and
Kayne McGee doubled in a losing cause.
The Hilltoppers return home to open a four-game Mountain East Conference weekend set with Alderson Broaddus on Friday. First pitch in Friday's afternoon twinbill is set for 1 p.m. at Kovalick FIeld.
