HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team closed out its run at the Hilton Head Spring Break Classic on Thursday with a 4-0 shutout of Berry (Ga.) College.
Coach Ron Hulewicz's Hilltoppers (8-2) posted 6-4 wins at No. 2 doubles (
Nevio Dux/Isfan Makhumudov) and No. 3 doubles (
Derek Roehner/
Alfonso Zerpa) to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles.
Erpel and Dux breezed to straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Zerpa bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the opening set of his No. 6 singles match with a 6-2 win in the second set to force a tiebreaker. Zerpa prevailed, 10-7, in the tiebreaker to lock up the 4-0 shutout for the Black and Gold.
The West Liberty men will be idle this week but return to action on March 22 with a 3 p.m. non-conference match at Mercyhurst (Pa.).
