SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - The West Liberty University men's soccer team dropped its Mountain East Conference quarterfinal match at #21 Notre Dame College, 5-1, this afternoon at Mueller Field.
The Hilltoppers came out and controlled possession for the first couple minutes of the match but could not get a shot off. After an offsides penalty at the 4:40 mark, Notre Dame took the first shot of the game and scored to take the lead five minutes in.
Daniel Rovira tried a quick answer, but was stopped by the Falcon keeper.
Danilo Tavares was right back at it less than three minutes later for West Liberty but missed the target. The offensive attack went quiet after the back-to-back shots as they accounted for the only 'Topper attempts of the first half.
Notre Dame added a 29th minute goal to take a 2-0 lead and then netted a third score just two minutes into the second half to take firm control of the contest.
Oskar Voges scored the Hilltoppers first ever playoff goal in the 73rd minute. After a Falcon defensive turnover, Voges won the one-on-one battle with the keeper and snuck it inside the left post.
Notre Dame added 70th minute and 85th minute goals late in the second half. All five Falcon scores were assisted with three being double assisted.
The Hilltoppers were unable to penetrate deep into the attacking zone as they were held to zero corner kicks and four shots, while Notre Dame created eight corners and took 21 shots.
This was the first playoff appearance in West Liberty men's soccer history.
