WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The No. 4-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team returns to the mat tonight for a Top 25 showdown against No. 11 Ashland (Ohio). First match is set for 6:30 p.m. inside the ASRC.
This will be the first action for Coach
Danny Irwin's Hilltoppers (5-3) since steamrolling a pair of Mountain East Conference foes in the Hilltopper Duals on Dec. 17. West Liberty blanked No. 22-ranked Fairmont State, 51-0, before cruising to a 39-8 win against a Davis & Elkins squad that was also receiving Top 25 votes.
The Eagles, coached by former Ohio State All-American Colt Sponseller, went 1-2 at last week's NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Ky. Ashland opened with a 24-15 win against Fort Hays State (Kan.) before wrapping up their run with losses to No. 5-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 40-3, and No. 3 McKendree (Ill.), 29-11.
Both teams enter tonight with nationally-ranked wrestlers set to hit the mat in five of the 10 weight classes. West Liberty is led by
Cole Laya (#2 at 125),
Ty McGeary (#2 at 174),
Connor Craig (#2 at 184),
Francesco Borsellino (#5 at 285) and
Logan Kemp (#7 at 197). Ashland counters with Aidan Pasiuk (#6 at 184), Walker Uhl (#9 at 197), Daniel Beemer (#10 at 174), Carson Speelman (#11 at 149) and Drew Wiechers (#11 at 165).
